His formative years at Berklee College of Music provided a solid foundation, further honed by studying under jazz luminaries such as Jeff Hamilton, Alan Dawson, and Joe Hunt. Notable mentors like Murray Spivack, Gunther Schuller, and David Baker enriched his composition and arranging skills, while Gary Burton and Dean Anderson influenced his mastery of mallet instruments.

Renowned in the jazz community as “Stein,” he has shared stages and recordings with a pantheon of jazz icons, from Joe Lovano to Branford Marsalis, showcasing his versatility and skill. Yet, Stein’s passion extends beyond performance; he fervently believes in the transformative power of music education, generously imparting his wisdom through lessons, clinics, and masterclasses at esteemed institutions worldwide.

Since relocating to the Pacific Northwest, Stein has enraptured audiences with his dynamic performances, particularly with his power trio featuring Josh Cook on tenor saxophone and King Dahl on bass.
